Susangongwon Cafe.

Gimposi, Gyeonggido

September 18th, 2022

After the early morning tour in the observatory and park, Aegibong Peace Ecopark, to see North Korea, we drove to one of the most popular bakery cafes in Gimpo, called Susangongwon Cafe to buy some bread for late breakfast.

This place is a huge entertaining complex consisting of a bakery cafe, a brunch restaurant, a bakery factory and a kids’ cafe. Susangongwon Cafe is very next to Daemyeong Port, which is a very famous port in the west coast of South Korea, where fishing boats come and go, and fish markets and restaurants are lined up. We Koreans call a fish market susan-sijang. So I can tell the cafe’s name from susan.

Susangongwon Cafe features many ocean themed works such as fish sculptures on the ceiling, boat tables, a big screen showing ocean animals including a humpback whale, white and blue colored walls and floors, stuff like that. This cafe was already well known for its unique ocean inspiring features drawing many instagram users. But recently it happened to be much more famous, thanks to the global hitting K-drama, Extraordinary Attorney Woo.

In case you are wondering, Extraordinary Attorney Woo is a story about a female lawyer with autism spectrum disorder. Her way of speaking and acting is not ordinary, but she solves cases with her genius and warm-heart. It is like a lawyer version of the TV show Good Doctor. It is an ENA(a Korean TV channel) original drama and also streaming on Netflix. Eunbin Park starred in the title role, Youngwoo Woo. As a mother of a disabled child, I know autistic people are obsessed by several things. As for my daughter it is Sponge Bob! Woo loves dolphins, whales and other sea animals. In 12th episode of the TV show, in front of the cafe Woo protests for freedom of dolphins in aquariums. Since this episode was aired, people have visited Susangongwon Cafe more and more.

You can order bakery products and coffee and other beverages on the first floor. Bread, cakes, pastries and scones are displayed, and its baking factory is seen through a window on the wall. Susangongwon Cafe‘s signature item is Spicy Tang Tang Bread. I warn you that it is so so so so spicy. Even though I am a huge fan of spicy food like many Koreans, it made me sweat a lot. But I love it!

On the second floor you can order and pick brunch. Of course there are many tables on the second floor, and great views.

The rooftop of the cafe is a photo zone called Stairs to Heaven. People were taking pictures feeling thrilled on the tiptop of the stairs. In a proper angle, it really looks like being in the high sky. SO INSTAGRAMMABLE!

One downside of this cafe is that it isn’t much designed for wheelchairs or baby strollers. Even its ground floor is a challenge for the disabled without help. It is quite ironic for a place of Extraordinary Attorney Woo. So Alex and Soo had to stay on the first floor, while I looked around the second floor and the rooftop.

Right after leaving the cafe, we passed Daemyeong Port. Now in Korea it is a season of jumbo shrimps, gizzard shad(jeoneo), and blue crabs. So their prices and qualities are very good. We really wanted to pull over at the market and buy some shrimps, but we were like “Maybe next time”, because there were so so many cars and people even though it was before noon. So maybe next time!
